Greenpeace hangs global warming banner on Mt. Rushmore

In a news release issued 10:19 AM Wednesday, Greenpeace announced it members had unfurled a large banner to side of the Lincoln head on Mt. Rushmore.
The banner proclaimed: "America honors leaders not politicians: Stop Global Warming."

Greenpeace notified KOTA Territory News by phone a few minutes in advance of their plans.

KOTA Territory News reporter Makenzi Henderson says at least one of the 3 climbers has been detained by the Park Service, but there is no word on the other two. Greenpeace said in its news release that 11 people were involved in the Rushmore action.

Henderson says the sign was removed about an hour after it was put up.
Hanging the banner likely could result in trespassing charges against the climbers. Mt. Rushmore is under federal jurisdiction.

This is not the first incident of this type involving the Shrine to Democracy.

Between 1970 and 1973, members of the American Indian Movement made several attempts to occupy and deface the monument.
In August 1970, members of the American Indian Movement hung a large banner with the words: SIOUX INDIAN POWER.
In 1975, a bomb went off in front of the visitor center in the early morning. No one was injured.
In October 1987, Greenpeace activists tried unsuccessfully to unfurl a banner shaped like a gas mask over the George Washington carving that stated: "We the People Say No to Acid Rain."
In 1999, a Colorado man was arrested for threatening to blow up Mt. Rushmore.

Security measures were beefed up at Mt. Rushmore after the 9-11 attacks, however security details have been kept confidential. There is no word from the Park Service on how the climbers were able to elude security measures.
