Congress Asked to Investigate Racial Extremism in Military

After 'White Only' Web Site Found

One of the country's main monitors of hate groups asks Congress for probe after photos of users wearing military uniforms were found on 'white only' Web site.

WASHINGTON -- One of the country's main monitors of hate groups asked Congress Friday to investigate possible racial extremism in the military, after finding U.S. service members participating on a social networking site advertised as being for white people only.

Researchers from the Southern Poverty Law Center, based in Montgomery, Ala., identified about 40 personal profiles of people who list the military as their occupation on the Web site New Saxon, according to the group's founder, Morris Dees.

The site, run by the Detroit-based National Socialist Movement, describes itself as an "online community for whites by whites." He said some of the participants are wearing military uniforms in profile photos, although it was not possible to verify whether any of them are actually serving in the armed forces.

I would think that it would be normal for a number of members of our military to hold racist views as there would be in most organizations with a lot of people that are recruited from the general population. To think otherwise would be naive. These people have a right to read and participate in discussion groups that hold similar views as long as they don't act out their beliefs in an unlawful manner. If we fear that their being in the military would provide training for future terrorist activities, then we must also allow that soldiers with extreme leftist views would get that same training. What can the military do about the situation? Banning web sites, reading material or organizations would be a violation of individual rights, I would think. I suppose this freedom of association with people with extremist views is one of the burdens we must bear (with due vigilance) to be a free and open society.
