Fort Drum sending 7,000 soldiers to Iraq

by By Mike McAndrew / The Post-Standard

Fort Drum - Two brigades from Fort Drum's 10th Mountain Division will be deployed to Iraq in 2009 and 2010, the Department of Defense announced today.

The 2nd Brigade Combat Team, currently training at Fort Polk's Joint Readiness Training Center, will be deployed in late 2009. The team's served in Iraq from August 2006 to November 2007.

The 1st Brigade Combat Team will be deployed to Iraq in early 2010. This team was in Iraq from September 2007 to November 2008.

There are about 3,500 soldiers in each of the 10th Mountain Division combat teams. The Fort Drum units are part of approximately 30,000 Army personnel who will be sent to Iraq to replace other units, with no increase in overall force levels. The 10th Mountain Division soldiers will be responsible for maintaining the peace outside Iraq's cities in partnership with Iraqi security forces.

A total of 126 soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division have died in Iraq since October 2003, according to the Fort Drum web site
